The Glencoe
Library began as a Mechanic’s Institute in 1881. A Carnegie
grant of $5000 was award to Glencoe on November 11, 1914. The
opening of the library was delayed by World War I, but in 1923 a
Carnegie library was opened on Main Street, remaining in service
until 1993. It was identical to Norwood Public Library in the
Peterborough area - the last 2 libraries to be financed by
Andrew Carnegie.
Following
interior re-organization and re-decorating in 1969, there was a
re-dedication ceremony. In 1983 major renovations were carried
out to the tune of about $38,000, and the Glencoe Historical
Society took up residence in the basement.
The
Library moved to its current location, the former Land Registry
Office on McKellar Street, opening in August 1993.
