Visit the newly revitalized
Local History area at the
Strathroy Library.
Strathroy Library received a
bequest from the estate of
Charlotte Rapley and a generous
donation from Clara Thomas, both
longtime residents of the town,
and these have been used to
purchase new resources and
furniture for the Local History
area. The library appreciates
their generous donations.

Branch History
In 1861, a
public library in Strathroy was established on Market Square,
the site of the present library building. In 1873 the
Mechanic’s Institute opened in Strathroy providing library
service and educational courses. Like many other branches,
the location of the Strathroy library changed several times over
the years. In1879 it was located in the Arcade Block at
the south-east corner of Front and Frank Streets. From 1896 to
1929 the library was located in space rented from the Howard
Lodge, Front Street East. From 1930 to 1965 the library
was located in the Town Hall.
A move to
the Strathroy Armories was proposed, but burst pipes prevented
this, and instead the current building was constructed on the
same site in 1965. Renovations in 1985 extended the back
of the building and created the art gallery where the Children’s
Library had been. On January 1, 1999 Strathroy Library
joined the Middlesex County Library system, becoming its largest
branch. The current building houses the Strathroy Library,
Art Gallery and Museum Strathroy-Caradoc, and is complemented by
a new Reading Garden, located behind the library.
